Benji, the Bad Day, and Me

Benji, the Bad Day, and Me

Written by Sally J. Pla

Illustrated by Ken Min

Ages 3–7 Picture book

Sammy has had a bad day and feels overlooked at home. His younger brother Benji, who is autistic, notices that he is upset and offers the comfort Sammy needs.

Why We Love It

Benji’s care for Sammy pushes back on the idea that autistic people cannot offer empathy or support. Both brothers have needs worth making space for, reminding us that fairness doesn’t mean treating everyone exactly the same.
