On the Trapline

On the Trapline

Written by David A. Robertson

Illustrated by Julie Flett

Ages 2–4 Picture book

A boy and his grandfather visit the trapline where his grandfather grew up, a place where his family hunted and lived off the land. Memories and Cree words connect the child with his family’s history and the land.

Why We Love It

We love the closeness between grandfather and child, and the way memories keep culture and language connected across generations. This story makes space for learning from elders and the places that matter to them.

Things to Know

Includes a reference to residential schools. Little Feminist recommends considering your child’s readiness for that conversation. Younger children can explore the pictures and return to the full text as they grow.
